Nanomaterials

The Nanomaterials Research Unit carries out fundamental and applied research aiming at synthesizing innovative nanostructured materials in the two following applicative domains:

  • Complex Nano-objects elaboration for composite materials and Nanomedecine.
Nano-objects are specifically designed and elaborated with the objective to tune the macroscopic properties of composite materials. Such know-how is also developed to investigate biocompatible nano-objects dedicated to the in-vivo imaging and therapy. This is based on the controlled interactions between nanomaterials with the biological relevant species (cells, bacteria etc.)
  • Conductive and Transparent Nanomaterials for invisible electronics and sensing.
Nanostructures (including nanofilms) are studied and fabricated with tuned electronic band structures. This is based on the precise synthesis of organic/inorganic nanostructures via advanced vapour phase processing allowing the integration of intelligent functions on large-area surfaces (glass, foils etc.)

The technological platform allows to produce multifunctional materials down to the atomic scale in order to fit their properties to the targeted application. The research is pushed down to the "proof-of-concept" based on simple prototyped devices. In parallel, new synthesis processes are developed in close collaboration with leading manufacturers in order to achieve unique elaboration capabilities.

In this context, the nanomaterials research unit fosters interdisciplinary research with high-level academic and industrial partners to translate the nanomaterials applications into the biomedical, and smart materials industries in a eco-responsible approach (nanomaterials safe by design) via promoting cross-disciplinary collaborations.
