Today, mass spectrometers are either high-performance but bulky, or compact and lightweight but with very limited performance (as most are based on quadrupole filters). Nevertheless, high-performance compact mass spectrometers are required as add-on tools for high-end analysis instruments.
Such compact spectrometers are being developed here based on a double focusing magnetic sector design to reach high transmission, high mass resolution and parallel detection. The dimensions of one such spectrometer are as small as 17 x 11 x 7 cm3, while having an extraordinary mass resolution of M/∆M = 2000. These compact mass spectrometers are used as add-on accessories for ion beam equipment, diagnostic tools on plasma equipment and field portable spectrometers for various applications, including isotopic measurements in hydrology, tracking of particles in the atmosphere and soil analysis.
