Created in 1992, the SAM department has become a reference laboratory in the fields of:
- characterisation of materials, surfaces and interfaces. SAM has a leading edge based on state-of-the-art instruments, used by highly-specialised scientists, allowing us to characterise any type of material down to nanometre scale;
- innovative surface treatments, allowing us treat and functionalise surfaces and deposit thin layers with optimised chemical, thermal, mechanical and physical (optical or electronic…) properties;
- design and development of scientific instruments. Our high-level scientists are specialists in ultra-vacuum techniques, electrostatic optics and plasma physics, and develop unique analytical instruments and custom-designed surface treatment techniques that can be transferred directly to industry;
- research in nanomaterials.
The SAM department gives its industrial and academic partners access to ultra-specialised technical platforms, and brings them the expertise of a multiple-discipline team of specialists in materials science. It provides a wide range of services to assist industrial clients and players in fundamental and applied research, in all their materials and surfaces R&D projects and technological development work, as well as helping them with their day-to-day problems concerning materials.
